The Hold Out 02:40
Early on you developed an immunity Found a way to stand apart from the community Distracted eyes always seeking opportunity Yeah you do it all the time, you’re the hold out Your record shows that it can just take one to tangle You prove the point with all the friendships that you’ve mangled Instead of listening are you working out the angles? Cause, you do that all the time, you’re the hold out Are you just delaying cause you’re scared of being wrong? You keep holding out until something better comes along You claim you’re blind but you got twenty twenty vision Locking in with a laser-like precision You call it independence but it’s indecision Yeah you do it all the time, you’re the hold out. Are you just delaying cause you’re scared of being wrong? You keep holding out until something better comes along The hold out The hold out The hold out

Well, I’m disgraced every time a face doesn’t look at me. Trying to find my place in a world where everybody’s a celebrity. I’ve been commended, I’ve been coddled. I’ve pretended I’m a model for most of my life. This is a different world than the one in which you grew up. I’m going to scatter my photos from a plane and let them rain over you. Everybody gets a copy and a print out of everything I’ve been up to. My name is gonna be famous You can’t blame us, you can’t shame us. This is what we were taught. This is a different world than the one in which you grew up. We’re all stars. We’re all stars. We are all stars. We’re all stars. We’re all stars. We are all stars. And nothing really matters if there’s no proof. You’re invited to a party and you better dress smartly so the pictures are good. We’re editing our memories and we only keep the cool ones, that’s understood. Are the pictures of the party? Is the party for the pictures? It doesn’t matter to me. This is a different world than the one in which you grew up. We’re all stars. We’re all stars. We are all stars. We’re all stars. We’re all stars. We are all stars. And what’s the point in doing things if there’s no proof? What are we supposed to do? Who do we think we are? We’re all stars. We’re all stars. We are all stars. We’re all stars. We’re all stars. We are all stars. And what’s the point in doing things if there’s no proof?

We didn’t see them until we did Now we see them everywhere If they had told us when we were kids Maybe we’d’ve been aware Maybe we’d’ve been prepared For bright blue lasers in our eyeballs Oh here they come As cute as a hook They’re one of the ones Try not to look We didn’t see them until we did Now we see them everywhere If they had told us when we were kids Maybe we’d’ve been aware Maybe we’d’ve been prepared For bright blue lasers in our eyeballs Oh here they come As cute as a hook They’re one of the ones Try not to look Oh no Look out Here they come They’re one of the ones Here they come (repeat) We didn’t see them until we did Now we see them everywhere

Lying on your back at night Pointing out a satellite A dim distant made up star Slowly fades out of sight Kind of like your appetite Who you were and who you are Don’t ask us for our suggestions We’ve all got the same questions Don’t ask me what my advice is Every day’s a midlife crisis Button on your workplace face Like a helmet made for outer space So no one can hear you scream Meeting bleeding into lunch Everyone’s talking at once No one can see you dreaming Don’t ask us for our suggestions We’ve all got the same questions Don’t ask me what my advice is Every day’s a midlife crisis Crisis, Crisis Christ, this can’t be all we are Dim distant made up stars Don’t ask us for our suggestions We’ve all got the same questions Don’t ask me what my advice is Every day’s a midlife crisis Don’t ask us for our suggestions We’ve all got the same questions Don’t ask me what my advice is Every day’s a midlife crisis Crisis, Crisis Christ, this can’t be all we are

We just want to live Live a life of leisure (that’s all we want) How, how can we live Live the life we choose? Aw doesn’t it seem Like life should be longer (We feel that way every day) So we, we do what we can To do the least we can Some people take more While other people get less Which are we? If we want to live Live a life of leisure We’ve been Tapped out With not much to show for it What are we working for? We don’t know. We, just want to live Live a life of Leisure Some people take more, honey While other people get less Which are we? If we want to live Live a life of leisure (that’s all we want) We want to live Live a life of leisure (that’s all we want) We just want to live Live a life of leisure

Pile into the car in the middle of the night. Everyone’s coming along so pack in tight. We might be the only ones awake in this whole town. The hottest night of the year with the windows rolled down. Running through the forest lit by the moon Don’t know where we’re going I don’t care if we get there soon Following the voices of friends with a towel in my hand For the first time in my life I think I understand And it happened so fast We don’t need permission We don’t want to stop And think things through Exploding the past Yeah, we’re on a mission Forgetting the future To make this one moment true A shimmering sliver of silver fades into sight. It’s the moon shining down on water on a perfect night It’s brighter down here by the lake than it was in the trees And for the first time in my life I don’t care who sees. And it happened so fast We don’t need permission We don’t want to stop And think things through Exploding the past Yeah, we’re on a mission Forgetting the future To make this one moment true Back up, back up. Get a running start. Back up, back up. This is the easy part. (instrumental) And it happened so fast We don’t need permission We don’t want to stop And think things through Exploding the past Yeah, we’re on a mission Forgetting the future To make this one moment true To make this one moment true To make this one moment true

Space, hanging over us Space, if we could just Feel it when we need it That’d be great Time, hanging over us I’m doing my best to bust Out of this routine You know what I mean Babe, we should be sneaking up on the moon Trying to catch a moment off guard Come on, let’s get out of this room And into the yard Earth, it can be so sweet When you notice It’s just below your feet Spinning, you can feel it If you want Babe, we should be sneaking up on the moon Trying to catch a moment off guard Come on, let’s get out of this room And into the dark Sneaking up on the moon Sneaking up on the moon Sneaking up on the moon Sneaking up on the moon Babe, we should be sneaking up on the moon We should be sneaking up on the moon We should be sneaking up on the moon We should be sneaking up on the moon

If I’m gonna stay in this New England town I’m gonna paint my house California Brown Gonna add a little color to the winter grey Gonna carve a little depth into the frozen day Breaking off the edges of the sidewalk ice The crunch beneath my boots sounds so nice But I’d trade it in a second just to hang around While the sun’s shining down on California Brown California Brown Where the gold trail ambles through the bone dry ground I’m the lion in the brambles just outside of town Staring down the valley but not making a sound. Waiting for the sun to go down. When the leaves are all gone and the branches are spikes And the neighborhood kids pack away their bikes And staring out the window is like staring at a frown. I try to remember California Brown California Brown Where the gold trail ambles through the bone dry ground I’m the lion in the brambles just outside of town Creeping towards the valley but not making a sound. Watching as the sun goes down. Sun settling down. Orange and blue above brown. California Brown Where the gold trail ambles through the bone dry ground I’m the lion in the brambles just outside of town Creeping down the valley but not making a sound. Watching as the sun goes down.

Sit on Roofs 04:03
There’s a poem about a painting In a book I got for free Don’t remember where it came from I like the poem I don’t know from poetry Took my car a couple thousand miles It was pretty warm when we got down there Gatorland I love your capybaras Don’t want to leave them there Don’t want to come home Something makes me want to sit outside Something makes me want to sit at night Something makes me want to sit on roofs Is winter gone forever? I hope it never comes back We can go out walking again Is winter gone forever? I hope it never comes back We can go and sit outside on roofs. I always want a different season But you can only drive so much So I keep my eyes on trees and Things will eventually change And we can sit on roofs Something makes me want to sit outside Something makes me want to sit at night Something makes me want to sit on roofs Is winter gone forever? I hope it never comes back We can go out walking again Is winter gone forever? I hope it never comes back We can go and sit outside on roofs.

Standing on the shore of a northern lake, The rocks beneath her feet, it feels like home. She left her shoes in the house on purpose, Dips one toe beneath the surface, Sending circle signals to the moose and the woods and the moon. Sitting on the bed in a northern room The window’s open wide so she can hear the loon Who’s call comes in like it has for years, The dog at her feet perks up his ears They’re growing up together on the shores of this northern lake. And the sun loves to rise as the moon loves to glow And the clouds love to part as the breeze loves to blow And the time loves to stand on the tall grass and watch As she stands on the rocks on the shore of this lake she calls home. Floating on her back in a northern lake Staring at the sky, late afternoon, When the water splashes into her ears The sound of glaciers is all she hears. The smell of dinner cooking blows across the lawn and lands in her smile. And the sun loves to rise as the moon loves to glow And the clouds love to rain as the snow loves to snow And the time loves to sit on the back porch and watch As she stands on the rocks on the shore of this lake she calls home. This is home. Feels like home. This is home. And the sun loves to rise as the moon loves to glow And the clouds love to part as the breeze loves to blow And the time loves to lie on the hammock and watch As she stands on the rocks on the shore of this lake she calls home.

College Town 03:44
Bend the desk lamp down to block the hated light Roommate rolls around clock says it’s late at night Grab a pen Glows out the window through the leafless trees Illuminates the bricks on the campus underneath Where they’re all asleep Put your head in your hands And the space between the letters Well it’s so much more than paper And I swear I can’t believe you’re on your own And the letters start to make words And the words complete this sentence I swear I can’t believe you’re on your own In this college town A lot of years have passed, I’ve only moved a mile Still cross the campus every once in a while If it’s on the way To my apartment And the space between the letters Well it’s so much more than pixels And I swear I can’t believe you’re on your own And the letters start to make words And the words complete this sentence I swear I can’t believe you’re on your own In this college town The bus stop bench, the courthouse steps The pizza place with the emergency slice The day time bar, the beater car The short cut across the railroad tracks This college town This college town This college town

Maybe you forgot Or maybe it was nothing I can’t fight the feeling that I might be the reason for some suffering. A lot of years have passed And we are both much older When I’m back in town I look around Don’t want you tapping on my shoulder Can’t you see That’s no way to go on living Take a look at me I’m willing to be forgiven If you can find it in your heart If we can put aside our egos If we start from the start Maybe you and me can be amigos Can’t you see That’s no way to go on living Listen to me I’m willing to be forgiven Enemies That doesn’t seem right It’s a strange definition for You and me When I’m out at night I will change my position Put a...put a wall behind me Cause I never know where you’ll be. I know you didn’t forget I know it wasn’t nothing I can’t fight the feeling the I might be the reason for some suffering The feeling ain’t pleasing realizing I’m the reason for some suffering.

Calling octopus. Misdirection octopus. Help me, octopus And get me out of this. I need octopus Confusion octopus Save me, octopus And get me out of here. Please. I don’t want to be the one to break the news I don’t want to be the one to let you know Any which way I choose looks like I’m gonna lose We’re never gonna get anywhere if we don’t start Oh no, I don’t want to be the one to break your heart. Calling octopus. Misdirection octopus. Awe some on, octopus Get me out of this. I don’t want to be the one to break the news I don’t want to be the one to let you know Any which way I choose looks like I’m gonna lose We’re never gonna get anywhere if we don’t start Oh no, I don’t want to be the one to break it I don’t want to have to instigate it I don’t want to be the one to break the news

If you want me to stay I could stay all night I got something to say to you, darling Will make you feel alright. ‘Cause I got, I got the best news of my life. If I can pull up this chair. If I can take off my coat, In the white of the bright kitchen light I’ll tell you all that I know How I got, I got the best news of my life. Yeah I got, I got the best news of our lives. We’ll sit still and unravelled, And try to count the roads we’ve traveled. Work out how we ended up right here. Grab a paper and pen Draw a vertical line Arrange family and friends Doesn’t matter if they’re yours or their mine We got the best new of our lives We got the best new of our lives We’ll sit still and unravelled, And try to count the roads we’ve traveled. Work out how we ended up right here. And when the people find out Everything’s gonna change But that’s the point, that’s the beautiful plan To go from normal to strange Yes we got, we got the best news of our lives. Yes we got, we got the best news of our lives. Yes we got, we got the best news of our lives.
